"Get with Philip Morris, and enjoy a man's kind of mildness."
I'll bet the guys in the ad copy department
had a good laugh when they knew Mike
Wallace would be saying that on TV.

In 1957, N.W. Ayer, Philadelphia's largest ad agency, was soliciting for the only the second time in its history, a cigarette account. Specifically, the Philip Morris company for its new, longer length brand, Philip Morris Commander. As a Production trainee, and aspiring copywriter, I wrote and submitted to Ayer management the line, "A Man's Kind of Mildness." Months later, following a transfer to our Detroit office, I received a personal note from Ayer's Chief Creative Officer, John Pullen, telling me, "Ted, your line won the account."
Weeks later, along with friends in Detroit, and family at watching at home in Philadelphia, it was exciting and fun to watch and hear Mike Wallace on CBS' 60 Minutes deliver the line, "A Man's Kind of Mildness." Soon, I returned to the Philadelphia office as
an official Ayer Copywriter.

Paul, Our daughter, Tracey Papariello, just sent this to me. Sorry we found it so late. And along with a "good laugh," came a large thrill. In 1957, N.W.Ayer, Philadelphia's largest agency, was soliciting, for only the second time in its history (Camel was the first), a cigarette account. Specifically, the Philip Morris company for its new, longer length brand (to compete with the successful Pall Mall) Philip Morris Commander. As an Ayer Production trainee, and aspiring copywriter, I wrote and submitted to Ayer management the lihe, "A Man's Kind of Mildness." Months later, following a transfer to our Detroit office, I received a personal note from Ayer's Chief Creative Officer, John Pullen, telling me, "Ted, congratulations, your line won the account." Some weeks later, along with friends in Detroit, and family watching at home in Philadelphia, it was very exciting to watch and hear Mike Wallace on CBS' 60 Minutes deliver the line, "A Man's Kind of Mildness."
